NSW Landcare Committee

The NSW Landcare Committee, the peak body for Landcare in NSW, met for the first time on Wednesday 10 August 2005. The committee consists of representatives of the NSW Landcare community as well as State and Local Government representatives and indigenous interests.

The Chair of the Committee also represents the NSW Landcare Community on the Natural Resources Advisory Council (NRAC), the peak natural resource management body in NSW. The NRAC provides a high level forum for stakeholders to advise the NSW Government on natural resource management issues.

The Committee is supported by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW). The Department is committed to supporting Landcare, believing that the Landcare community has an important role to play in working with the Catchment Management Authorities, particularly in involving the community in implementing the Authorities’ Catchment Action Plans.

Landcare NSW Incorporated

Landcare NSW Incorporated held its inaugural meeting in November 2007.

Landcare NSW Inc will act as lobby and liaison group for the NSW Landcare Movement and will advise the NSW Landcare Committee on grassroots Landcare issues. The Reference Group is expected to have Landcarer representatives from each CMA area in NSW.

The group was established at the NSW Landcare Muster, held at Tamworth on 24 October 2007, which was attended by grassroots Landcare representative from around NSW.

One of the first tasks of Landcare NSW Inc is to establish sub-committees to look at the issues of representation, identifying key activities and legal issues such as the draft constitution.

David Walker, Executive Officer of the Liverpool Plains Land Management Committee is the chair of NSW Landcare Inc and its representative on the NSW Landcare Committee.

2009 NSW Landcare Awards winners announced

The winners of the 2009 NSW Landcare Awards were announced at the 2009 NSW Landcare and Catchment Management Forum dinner, held at Port Macquarie on 10 September 2009.

Winners were announced in ten categories. In nine out of the ten categories, the first place winners have been nominated as the NSW applicant at the 2010 National Landcare Awards. In the Landcare Community Group category joint first place winners of Buckwaroon Catchment Landcare Group and Southern New England Landcare were announced and Southern New England Landcare will represent NSW at the National Landcare awards.”

There was also a NSW People’s Choice Award which was won by the Northern Beaches Roadkill Prevention Committee.

Landcare NSW PlaceStories

Landcare NSW PlaceStories is an exciting collaboration between Landcare NSW Inc and Feral Arts. This is a site for sharing local knowledge, local stories and local views on sustainable farm practices and natural resource management issues across New South Wales.

Landcare NSW PlaceStories is an information tool designed to enhance storytelling, communication and collaboration between individuals, communities, networks and organisations about National Landcare Program and other projects affecting communities and the environment throughout New South Wales.

NSW Environmental Trust - Environmental Research Grants

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) has announced that funding for 2010 of $1,000,000 is available as Environmental Research Grants under the NSW Environmental Trust.

The objectives of the Environmental Research Program are:

  • to generate new knowledge or information to facilitate local solutions to environmental problems
  • discover new methods of operation for NSW industries that are less harmful to the environment
  • provide knowledge about general environmental problems
  • to assess environmental degradation.

The Environmental Trust has designated Climate Change as the major category for the next three rounds of the research program, starting in 2010, with the following minor categories:

  • Biodiversity and Conservation
  • Integrated Landscape Management
  • Environmental Pollution
  • Resource Efficiency and Sustainability

The maximum amount available per grant in the Climate Change category is $200,000, with a maximum amount of $100,000 in the other categories.

The Environmental Research Program also provides seeding grants, with a maximum amount of $20,000.

Landcare and other community groups are welcome to apply in all categories. Applications will be accepted until 5 pm, 12 February 2010.

Australian Landcare Council Reinstated

The Australian Government has reactivated the Australian Landcare Council.

The new Chair of the Council is Kim Chance, the former Western Australia Agriculture Minister.

2010 National Landcare Forum - Adelaide

A national forum for landcare and related community groups will be held at the Adelaide Racecourse (also known as Allan Scott Park), Morphettville, Adelaide, South Australia on 22-25 March 2010.

The theme of the 2010 forum is Landcare celebrates – 20 years of achievements and future challenges.

The key objectives of the forum are to:

  • provide opportunities for people interested in healthy landscapes to communicate with each other
  • learn from each other
  • renew contacts and reinforce networks for sustainable natural resource management, and
  • discuss future challenges and opportunities.

The forum will be particularly relevant to people involved in:

  • community groups focussed on the environment
  • farmers and landholders
  • people interested in creating sustainable landscapes, lifestyles and livelihoods for the 21st century
  • rural, regional and urban land managers
  • indigenous land managers, and
  • research and land development agencies.

Around the groups

The National Trust of Australia (NSW) is hosting an exhibition, Nicholas Harding: Drawn to paint, from 15 January to 7 March 2010, at its S.H. Ervin Gallery, located at Watson Road (entry from Argyle Street), Observatory Hill, The Rocks, Sydney. In its mission to conserve natural, built and cultural heritage, the National Trust aims to promote the idea of a sense of place and the importance of recognising and preserving unique places. Artist Nicholas Harding documents a distinctly Australian sense of place, in particular Sydney, from its sun drenched beaches and industrial settings to its spectacular flora. Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Sunday 11.00 am – 5.00 pm (last admissions 30 mins before closing). Closed Mondays & Public Holidays. Entry Fees are $7, $5 seniors & concessions, $4 national trust members. Go on an exciting discovery walk through the Warriewood Wetlands on 12 February 2010, 7:45 pm - 9:30 pm. Coastal Environment Centre educator and fauna expert, Sonja, will present an informal chat about local native fauna and take you on a guided walk. This chat will involve interesting facts about habitat and vegetation, bats and frogs and other interesting facts such as threatened species, simple things we can do to help minimise impact on fauna and fauna habitat. You will have the opportunity to use spotlights to see what you can find and record bat noises using the anabat machine. Most importantly you will discover how to enjoy this amazing natural wonderland whilst being a responsible visitor. Costs are $8 for people 13 and over, $5 for kids 5-12 and $20 for families. The Coastal Environment Centre, a facility of Pittwater Council, is offering a boat cruise along the beautiful Pittwater Estuary on 14 February 2010. Another cruise is available on 14 March 2010. Participants will cruise from Palm Beach, to Mackerel Beach, then to The Basin where you will enjoy a gourmet lunch and return to Palm Beach. This day out has mastered the art of merging social interaction with an enjoyable learning experience from local environmental educators. This event is a family-friendly event with activities for kids and families. The day’s activities will include:

  • Boat tour of Pittwater estuary.
  • Up-close viewing of seagrass-friendly moorings & walk and talk on saltmarsh and seagrass.
  • Informal workshops may include: bird-watching, Indigenous culture and heritage, fish and recreational fishing, snorkeling (must bring own equipment and pre-book), Oyster industry on the Hawkesbury, bushcraft, Inter-tidal marine animals (workshops may change without notice).
  • Organised fun activities for children, including bushcraft.
  • Cold lunch and refreshments included.
  • Discussions will cover the multitude of ecosystems at work and how daily activity can bring long-term changes - to natural resources including water, plants, animals and air.

The cost is $55 per adult, $25 for children (10-15yrs) $8 per child (6- 9yrs) and kids under 6 years are free (max 2 per booking; additional children $5 each). Project AWARE on the Coast is a community marine education course run by Ocean and Coastal Care Initiatives (OCCI) over a number of weeks to teach about the fantastic marine life in our coastal waters. Ecology, safety, regulations, cultural considerations and field trips form part of the course. If you want to learn about marine life, come along to the information session at Port Stephens on 17 February 2010 or at Lake Macquarie on 18 February 2010 to find out what it's all about. The Port Stephens course will then start on 3 March 2010 and the Lake Macquarie course is on 4 March 2010.

The 2010 NSW Conservation Agriculture Field Day will be held at the Trangie Agricultural Research Centre (8km west of Trangie on Mitchell Highway) on 18 February 2010. Gates open 8.30 am and activities commence 9.30 am. There will be demonstrations and static displays in :

  • new disc and tyne machinery
  • farmer converted machinery
  • controlled traffic and precision agriculture equipment
  • stubble management equipment
  • non-inversion tillage equipment
  • spray technologies
  • soil pits and rainfall simulator
  • training and information from the CMAs, NSW Department of Industry and Investment and agribusiness

The event is organised in partnership by the Conservation Agriculture and No-till Farming Association (CANFA), Central West Farming Systems (CWFS), Farmlink Research and Industry & Investment NSW. Oceans and Coastal Care Initiatives (OCCI) Central Coast have a meeting at the new Marine Discovery Centre, 11 Terrigal Dr, Terrigal, on 24 February 2010 at 7 pm. The meeting will include a guest speaker, Sarah Huscroft, on The origins of sustainable development and how it applies to the marine environment. Supper is provided. Non-members are welcome to drop in and see who OCCI is and what it does.

Brunswick Valley Landcare (BVL) (Far North Coast) has a workshop on 27 February 2010 on ‘How Weeds Affect Biodiversity’ with Mark Evans. Some of our environmental weeds are having a severe impact on native fauna and flora. If the Richmond Bird Wing butterfly accidentally lays is eggs on the exotic Dutchmans Pipe Vine instead of the native and similar looking Birdwing vine, the caterpillars cannot feed and subsequently die. The commonly called Velcro weed or silver desmodium is so sticky that small animals have died attached to the plant. This workshop will teach you about the effects that environmental weeds are having on biodiversity. The cost for non BVL members is $5. Afternoon tea provided. The Pelican Blacksmiths Landcare Group is holding a field day to celebrate the completion of the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust program at Soldiers Road Reserve, Pelican (near Swansea) on 28 February 2010 from 9 am to 12 pm. The field day in February will include a guided tour of the Soldiers Road site complete with native plant identification by Carl Fulton, Landcare Vegetation Officer. They will look at all the highlights of the site that became possible due to the Environmental Trust grant, as well as the wonderful natural elements of this urban bushland environment. Rainforest Rescue and Inspired Adventures are looking for twenty people that are willing to go on an adventure that can help protect the forests, save the orangutan and change the world. They are organising a fundraising trek through the jungles of Sumatra. Participants will visit the orangutan rehabilitation program in Gunung Leuser National Park, trek through the stunning rainforests of Indonesia and contribute toward the protection of this vital ecosystem. The duration of the trek proper is four days on a moderate grade track. The entire trip will last from 5 to 15 March 2010. Potential participants will need to raise $6000 funds which will cover travel and accommodation costs outlined by the itinerary, with the remainder being used by Rainforest Rescue to help reafforest and protect the orangutan's habitat. Participants will also need to pay an additional $700 registration fee as well as extra costs for items not covered by the itinerary. The next Australian Seabird Rescue (ASR) Marine Wildlife Workshop will be held on 13 March 2010, 8.30 am to 4.30 pm at the ASR Marine Wildlife Centre, Ballina. The workshop is a great opportunity for new and potential members to find out what ASR is all about and how you can help save our local wildlife. You must register prior to the workshop to secure your place, by phoning 02 6686 2852. The workshop is great value at $20 for members and $30 non-members and includes morning and afternoon tea, lunch and handbook.

ErinEarth is an environmental education house and garden on half a hectare of land in central Wagga Wagga. It has an open day on 20 March 2010, 10 am to 3 pm. The day will feature a workshop on growing wattles from seed. There will also be a large number of Eremophilas (emu bushes) available for purchase. ErinEarth is located at 1 Kildare Street, Wagga Wagga.

The Coastal Environment Centre (CEC) is the perfect venue for your next seminar, training session or small conference. The Centre is available for hire on an ongoing or casual basis at affordable rates. Situated on Sydney's spectacular Northern Beaches and overlooking Narrabeen Lagoon, the CEC offers a quiet, private and attractive setting and provides a wide range of facilities. Grassland Flora, a Field Guide for the Southern Tablelands (NSW and ACT), by David Eddy, Dave Mallinson, Rainer Rehwinkel and Sarah Sharp, is an easy to use field guide for grassy ecosystems with numerous colour photographs and some illustrations of grassland plants of the Southern Tablelands of NSW and the ACT. Dyers Crossing Landcare Group Inc has published a field identification guide for indigenous trees. Although focusing on the Wallamba Valley (near Taree) and surrounds, this guide has relevance for vegetation across a wide area of Coastal NSW. The guide is 128 pages in length and is printed in colour. It has five sections.

  • Section 1 provides basic information about how to use the book, including keys for use in identifying trees.
  • Section 2 is the main section of the book and contains colour photographs, diagrams and descriptions of 72 common Australian trees and shrubs. This section was written by a Hunter/Central Rivers CMA Board member who has considerable expertise in tree identification and bush regeneration.
  • Section 3 contains information important for readers who wish to learn how to protect habitats for common and threatened species of plants and animals. This section was written by the Senior Threatened Species Officer in the Department of Environment and Conservation, Coffs Harbour.
  • Section 4 contains a description of four major weed trees found locally. This section was compiled from information provided by Greater Taree City Council, Great Lakes Council and the Midcoast Weeds Advisory Committee.
  • Section 5 contains references, resources, a glossary of terms and diagrams of typical leaf shapes.

The book has 80 colour photographs and is spiral-bound to facilitate tree identification in a field setting. The cost is $11 per copy plus $5 for postage and handling. The book is available by written request to PO Box 3 Nabiac NSW 2312.

Penny Watsford and Margaret Elliott are members of the Friends of Wollumbin Landcare group, in northern NSW. They have produced the following guides:

  • Plants of the Forest Floor: a guide to small native plants of subtropical eastern Australia by Penny Watsford and Margaret Elliott describes over 84 plants, with 'Plain English' text compiled by Penny and detailed line drawings by Margaret. Included with the book is a CD-ROM, produced by Botanists Robert Price and Lui Weber, with colour photos of 150 plants. The book contains gardening notes, references and an index. A5 format. 115 pages. Cost $20
  • Grasses of Subtropical Eastern Australia - An introductory field guide to common grasses: native and introduced by Margaret Elliott illustrates and describes 72 species of grass. It also includes a CD-ROM with over 500 colour photographs of 126 native and introduced species. 105 pages, Cost $20.

Mount Gibraltar Landcare and Bushcare is publishing The Gib, a book about Mount Gibraltar, which is a prominent landmark just outside of Bowral. The book is packed with information about this special place. It describes the Aboriginal and European social history from bark shelters to grand houses, the industrial history of the railway, the famous Bowral Trachyte quarries and the restoration of the Mount Gibraltar Reserve. Specialists introduce the natural

Native Dog Landcare Group, in collaboration with Berrigan Shire Council and Charles Sturt University have issued a publication - Native Vegetation Guide for the Riverina - notes for land managers on its management and revegetation. The Guide provides information in the western Riverina and key issues in vegetation management, restoration, and plant establishment. Vegetation profiles are provided for all land systems in the region plus illustrated descriptions of over 300 species. The Guide costs $40 (including GST and postage). Ocean & Coastal Care Initiatives (OCCI) has produced the Mollusc Man CD. The CD gives an educational tour of the NSW east coast of Australia between the Central Coast and Taree. From rock platforms to estuaries, and molluscs to birds this CD explores the habitats and the life forms of the coastal realm and aims to educate on how to best learn, explore, enjoy and preserve our wonderful coasts. This great educational resource is available for free (but please consider a donation) to schools, educators and interested members of the public. STEP Inc has also produced the following publications:

  • Field Guide to the Bushland of the Upper Lane Cove Valley - Written by John Martyn, this Field Guide contains an overview of the area's natural history, describes fifteen bushwalks, lists the flora and fauna, and contains over 300 illustrations of plants, fungi, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds in the Upper Lane Cove Valley. Services Available

Lachlan Aboriginal Natural Resource Management Group (LANRMG) have Natural Resource Management & Cultural Heritage Canoe Tours between September 2009 and April 2010. These travel along the Lachlan River over various distances. The trips demonstrate and highlight natural resource managment and cultural heritage impact zones including erosion, water quality, salinity, quarries, infrastructure, native aquatic and riparian vegetation, biodiversity and exotic weeds infestation. The trips include farm visits discussing farm management technique and conservation strategies. Other activities throughout the tour will include cleaning rubbish from the waterways, Aboriginal cultural awareness, capacity and team building, self esteem and motivation to engage in future NRM activities. Palmvale Community Landcare (North Coast) has released the Eco Monitoring Kit. This information package has been designed as a utility to assist in managing community Landcare projects. It attempts to bring together sufficient resources and relevant information to enable individuals or community groups to manage their ecological restoration and/or rehabilitation projects. Beginning with the formation of a group to seeking funding and ensuring suitable monitoring methods are applied, this package will endeavour to provide the foundation to facilitate effective, efficient environmental change. Grants and Competitions

The Conservation Agriculture and No-till Farming Association (CANFA) is fortunate to have an opportunity to give away at GPS guidance unit at this year's NSW Conservation Agriculture Field Day at Trangie Agricultural Research Centre on February 18, 2010. Conservation farmers 35 years or under are eligible to enter the prize by providing one A4 page of information include: name, age, address, details of current farming experience and farming systems operation, proposed farming operation, how a GPs unit will be used to implement conservation farming principles, and why they should be considered a worthy winner.
